Good Friday? What a becoming notion...
At Alto, every Friday is Good Friday. Good Friday is an opportunity for each person to reconnect with what really matters to them.
In 2005, we allocated our Fridays to ‘Becoming’. We give ourselves permission to prioritise our own needs and focus on our own development. Sometimes we need to relax and take stock, other times we work furiously on creative pro-bono projects no monetary value but mean something to us.
We talk, connect with each other and relax. We pursue our own interests; whether they be design development, research, sustainability, 3D modeling, global justice, typography, art, digital storytelling or motion graphics. It's an opportunity to work on projects and create things with no monetary value but mean something to us.
Fridays have supported us to create meaning, have given us space to challenge the dominant paradigm, to network, to learn, and to resource ourselves to become better people.
This is when we have had a chance to crank up our commitment to sustainability.
Interestingly, we discovered that the same levels of productivity for a 40 hour week was maintained even though we spent 8 hours less a week working for clients.
This is a really important lesson for our culture. It seems that we hold some notions, some ideas about how things are, and how they work best, which are actually fiction. They do not serve us. And a 40 hour working week seems to be one of them.
How much of our life are we wasting? Our world will become a better place when we have the space in our life to focus on this goal.
Remember the entrepreneur's maxim - we get what we give our energy and focus to.
So for us, Friday is for focusing on possibility and opportunity. This is one way that we actively produce a good experience of our working life. It helps us to be creative, relaxed and fulfilled. And ultimately, these are great qualities for a designer to have. And the best bit? We pass them on to you.
