No matter how much we recycle plastic, re-use every sheet of paper, reduce our electricity, offset emissions and become involved in dialogues around sustainability, we are going to be honest;
This business is un-sustainable.
Until every computer we use, every chair that we sit on and every lunch that we consume is created from organic materials and can be returned to the earth safely without leaching toxic chemicals; until a time when all the electricity we draw and the transport we use is powered by renewable resources, then we are running an unsustainable business.
That's the harsh reality. But the joyous reality is that every single thing we do counts. And better still, it adds up. We are incrementally better each day. For example, with a single change of internal policy we have cut our internal paper ruse by two thirds. Its better for our profit, and better for the environment. Win, Win.
What is sustainability? Sustainable practice means we meet our present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Another win, win.
The thing to keep in mind is our best intentions. The Art of Sustainable Living requires flexibility, compromise and creativity. At this point, most everything we do, has non-ideal implications. The key is to minimise harm, creatively.
See what happened when we tried to apply our sustainable objectives to meet our print identity!
